1. | BAO was founded by outstanding scientist, National Hero of Armenia Viktor Ambartsumian in 1946 as an institute of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. |
2. | Stellar associations were discovered in 1947 by Viktor Ambartsumian in BAO. The formation of the stars in groups and the continuous processes of star formation currently occurring in the Galaxy have been proved. |
3. | In the middle of 1950s, Viktor Ambartsumian put forward the hypothesis of the activity of galactic nuclei, as a result of which a new direction of astrophysics has been developed. |
4. | The First Byurakan Survey (FBS) has been created by Beniamin Markarian in BAO in 1965-1980. The survey is the largest ever astronomical spectroscopic survey of the northern sky and is considered as one of the most important achievements of the astrophysics in 20th century. This was a new method of search for active galaxies. |
5. | In BAO, Grigor Gurzadyan designed and built the first space telescopes of the USSR "Orion" (1971) and "Orion-2" (1973), which were operating in ultraviolet range. |
6. | BAO is one of the rarest observatories in the world where many new cosmic objects have been discovered. About 14,500 cosmic objects have Armenian names. |
7. | The 1m Schmidt system telescope operating in BAO is in the list of the 10 largest wide-field telescopes in the world. |
8. | The ZTA-2.6 telescope (installed in 1975) is the largest observational instrument of BAO and one of the 10 biggest telescopes of Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. At the time of its installation, it was the 7th largest telescope in the world. |
9. | BAO architectural ensemble was constructed by famous Armenian architects Samvel Safaryan and Sargis Gurzadyan. |
10. | The world's first international conference on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) and communication with them (CETI) was held at BAO in 1971. |
11. | Due to BAO, Byurakan village appears in the list of 10 "cities", such as Paris, Rome, Vienna, Beijing, where the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) meetings took place most frequently. |
12. | The Byurakan International Summer Schools (BISS, held since 2006) were recognized by IAU in 2018 as one of the top-3 astronomical schools in the world. Until now, 8 summer schools have been held: 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2022. The 2010 school was combined with the International School of Young Astronomers (ISYA). |
13. | BAO was the first among all Soviet observatories that was awarded Lenin Order in 1968, the highest in the USSR. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of its foundation, BAO was also awarded with a Gold Medal of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. |
14. | The world-famous scientist, National Hero of the Republic of Armenia V. Ambartsumian’s house-museum was opened in BAO since 1998. In the same year, BAO was named after Viktor Ambartsumian. |
15. | The Armenian Astronomical Society (ArAS), founded in 2001, operates in BAO and unites 100 astronomers from 20 countries all over the world. ArAS is also a member of the European Astronomical Society (EAS). |
16. | The first digitalization project of Armenia was carried out in BAO in 2002-2007, the digital version of 2000 plates of Markarian Survey (DFBS) was created and reserved in the largest Armenian astronomical database. |

23. | According to the agreement signed between the RA Ministry of Ecology the green area of BAO territory was recognized as an Arboretum in 2017. |
24. | With the efforts of BAO the Artsakh Astronomical Laboratory was founded in the Artsakh Scientific Center in 2021. |
25. | In addition of carrying out scientific activities, BAO also carries out many astronomical educational and public events among schoolchildren, teachers and students. |
